state and local governments, we turn to virginia. the state's governor is looking for new revenues from a product as old as the hills: alcohol. stephanie dhue looks at whether the governor's plan to privatize liquor sales will be a budget win or a hangover in the making. >> reporter: in town hall meetings around the state, governor robert mcdonnell is making the case for getting virginia out of the liquor business. >> i don't necessarily think it's a core function of government to have to distribute gray goose or jack daniel's, i think there's other things that are probably more important. >> reporter: the governor proposes auctioning 1,000 liquor licenses to retailers, like costco, giant, and 7-11, which already sell beer and wine in virginia. the state would also auction wholesale licenses and get rid of its warehouse and state-owned stores. the proposal promises to bring in nearly $0.5 billion to help fund transportation projects. >> letting the free market work, we can generate a one-time windfall for transportation and keep an equivalent amount of money coming to the state, it's ju

that are going to continue until, well probably getting picked up about now. 95 northbound in virginia, seeing everybody moving well but the growing volume. back to you in the studio. >>> we're following a developing story out of northern california this morning where a massive fire ball is still burning out of control in the middle of a residential town in san bruno, a neighborhood south of san francisco. the massive explosion and fire ball destroyed more than 50 homes and killed at least one person. fire investigators say it appears to be a natural gas line explosion. dozens of people were injured and many more are still unaccounted for. this morning some neighbors are describing how they escaped the flames. >> i had trouble getting out, i had to -- car was -- i have a car in the driveway but it is burning already. this car was in the garage and able to get in it and i had to lift the garage door manually and jump in and ride out through the fire. and it kind of melted the tail lights a little bit. >> everyone who lives in the immediate area is being evacuated. the cause of the explosion is

in virginia for examination. the blast killed 8 people and destroyed numerous homes. a fifth person has been charged with posing as a victim of that pipeline explosion in order to get help. 51-year-old daniel stansbury of los altos has pled not guilty to seven charges including identity theft and falsely claiming aid. prosecutors say he went to a resource center for blast victims used a false name and said he lived in the crestmoor neighborhood. he then allegedly accepted more than $2,000 in gift cards. prosecutors also say he spent nine nights in hilton hotels paid for by pg&e. >>> the off again on again execution is now off again and it will be for some time. albert greenwood brown was scheduled to be put to death tonight. it would have been california's first execution in nearly five years. but the state supreme court denied a request by the state to begin using new procedures for lethal injection. now the state won't be able to execute brown until 2011 because california's supply of lethal injection drugs expires tomorrow. a new supply won't arrive until next year. >>> a bay area mom is

along the east coast it is now a big game of wait and see for hurricane earl. the governor of virginia is set to declare a state of emergency in his state today. and in north carolina, hundreds of residents living on the outer banks have been ordered to evacuate as the cat 4 storm approaches. the governor gave this warning to residents. >> any person who lives on the coast of north carolina, or any person who has reason to think the storm track might go over their house, ought to go out and gather up those supplies, put them in that water-tight box. it doesn't cost a lot to buy batteries and snacks and water to get through three or four days. medicine if you need it. evacuation plans if the worst should happen. but only we can take care of ourselves. we have all of the players from the most remote part of north carolina to the most urban part all on ready. we're set. and when the hurricane hits we can go. >> tense days ahead for those folks. not since hurricane bob in 1991 has such a powerful storm had such a large swath of the east coast in its sights. that's according to the national

immigrants from virginia to missouri. i never really thought about immigration much growing up. my grandfather was italian. i was aware he had a different life from me. and very grateful for the opportunities that he give us. my father was the youngest child growing up in the depression. all they wanted to do was the american. he does not even know italian. i never even thought about it. during the development of a career path, i fell into immigration. like a lot of young attorneys, i was interested in human rights. i was offered a job at the department of justice with the ins. i was not tried to do it. i started thinking about what i cared about. it was public service. you make a difference where you are. i believed for the 13 years that i was in ind and then dhs, that i was able to help make changes within the government structure. i was detailed to senator kennedy's office. i worked on the immigration bill. when it was time to go back to dhs -- i decided i needed to be more engaged in the public debate. there's some things you cannot do as a public servant that you can do on the

as a category 3 by tomorrow evening. hurricane warnings are up for carolina and virginia. as you notice, the category 3 becomes a 2 heading parallel to the new england coastline for the holiday weekend. it is a dangerous category 4. the biggest threat with this will be the rain, the wind and the potential for some rip currents. here in the bay area it was the heat today. very summer like. numbers in the 90s. look at the mid to upper 90s. 97 in concord. even around the bay, 90 in oakland and 91 in san rafael. coastal areas are on the warm side. half moon bay in san francisco in the 70s and the 80s. by the way, pacifica came up a good 21 from yesterday's highs. just to give you an indication as to the magnitude of the heat, the high definition emeryville camera, sun down at 7:39. no fog in sight. but that is going to change. the numbers right now are under clear skies. really warm still. 60s and 70s except in half moon bay where it is 55 degrees. another hot day inland tomorrow. not as warm at the coast. and we are facing a cooling trend heading into the weekend. watch what happens on our
